In terms of European trophies, AC Milan is Italy's most successful club. The Rossoneri have won seven European Cups/Champions League trophies, two UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, and five European/UEFA Super Cups. Although AC Milan trails Juventus in the number of Scudetti won, it has conquered Europe on more occasions than its Italian rival.
AC Milan was founded in 1899 by English expats Herbert Kilpin and Alfred Edwards. The club's history of being founded by Englishmen is showcased today in the AC Milan badge—the St. George's Cross is on the badge alongside AC Milan's famous red and black stripes.
The club's first of 18 Scudetti was won two years after formation. By the end of 1907, AC Milan had secured three league trophies. In 1908, city rivals Internazionale Milano were formed after members of AC Milan split from the established football club. After the split, AC Milan didn't win another league title until 1951.
The 1980s and 1990s are often considered the pinnacle of AC Milan's success in Italy and Europe. Silvio Berlusconi purchased AC Milan in 1986 for €8 million, and under his watch, the club signed some of the biggest names in football and won trophy after trophy.
Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten were just two of the major names Berlusconi brought to the club. In 2017, Berlusconi sold the club to Rossoneri Sport Investment Lux. The Chinese ownership was unable to keep up with the club's costs and sold AC Milan to Elliott Management Corporation in 2018. Since then, AC Milan has become more financially stable.
